Freemont Peak Camping Trip
There are twenty-five primitive campsites with tables, fire rings, and pit toilets. There is very reasonable shade from the many oak trees, but we brought a shade canopy for extra protection. We experienced some annoyance of small flies, but not too bad. There is a hiking loop trail of moderate difficulty that is 2 and ½ miles total length. There is a great view of the valley and some opportunities for sighting birds. They don’t allow dogs on the trail which is a bummer.
The park is located off State Highway 156, about 11 miles from San Juan Bautista. The California State Park system has many good camping areas and most often will provide excellent information in the way of maps and brochures. You can visit their web site at: www.parks.ca.gov.
The park is very quiet and provides a nice clean location for either tent or RV camper. Water is available but no flush toilets or showers.
The park is open year-round. Day use hours are from 8am to 30 minutes after Sunset. Well-behaved dogs are welcome. You can reserve a campsite six months in advance by visiting the on-line booking web site:reservecalifornia
San Juan Bautista has a convenient market in case you run out of something.
